On the 3rd December every year we celebrate the International Day of Disabled Persons. This year’s theme is about hidden disabilities.

This year we wan’t to spread awareness and understanding ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ such as: mental illness, chronic pain, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, learning disabilities and autism.

According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15% of the world’s population (that’s more than 1 billion people) are living with disability of some kind. 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition— and two-thirds of these people will not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination and neglect. National statistics show that there are 1.5 million people in the UK who have a learning disability.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected people with disabilities. Increased isolation, feeling disconnected, disrupted routines and fewer support services available has meant that there has been a huge impact on mental health and wellbeing.

We hope you will join us in celebrating and helping us to raise awareness of the importance of International Day of Disabled Persons this year.
