Find out about how we like to stay healthy

Out and About

We love to go exploring with our members and often visit parks, museums and local attractions. Where we go is up to the group and it’s a great way to get some fresh air, socialise and discover our wonderful city.

Roundhay, Harrogate and Otley are all a short journey away and are popular choices for day trips in the summer.

We also plan bigger trips away to the seaside. This year, we all went to Scarborough!

Keeping Healthy

Healthy Living and Exercise

We love doing exercise and playing sports in the parks having fun with frisbee, hula hoops, rounders and other ball games. It’s great fun doing keep fit exercise together and everyone really joins in and has fun. We also talk about diet and healthy approaches to food and understand what a healthy lifestyle is about.

Gardening

During the summer, we visit our allotment at Lady Pitt Lane every Wednesday. We are lucky to be working alongside Lou from Groundworks Yorkshire who helps us look after and grow all our vegetables. After a morning of hard work, digging and weeding, we do some relaxing creative crafts in the afternoon.

The gardening group takes a break in the Winter and Autumn and runs when the weather is better during Spring and Summer.

Women’s Health

Keeping our physical bodies fit and healthy through exercise and diet is important, but some changes we face as we get older can be even more challenging for someone with a learning disability. Susan, our co-chair, talks openly about her experiences of going through the menopause in a BBC Breakfast Film to help raise awareness of the issues.
