To celebrate volunteers week 2019 we are interviewing our volunteers. In this interview, they talk about their role, what it involves and what they gain from it.
For our third interview we speak to Kate Hardy who is our longest- serving club night volunteer. Kate speaks about her role and what impact the club nights have on adults with a learning disability.
1.How did you hear about LEEP1?
I was searching for volunteering opportunities and came across Leep1’s disability club night volunteering role on the “doing good in Leeds” website.
2. How long have you been volunteering with LEEP1?
I started volunteering with Leep1 in November 2016, so just under 3 years.
3. What does your role involve?
My role involves greeting the attendees of the club on the door of Pryzm, selling tickets, welcoming everyone into the venue. After the tickets have been sold, I go upstairs to help make sure that everyone is having a good time. There are raffles and other activities which I also help with.
4. Why did you decide to volunteer for LEEP1?
I wanted to volunteer in an area which would allow me to both develop new skills, whilst also being able to give something to the community by making a difference, in some of my free time whilst in my final year of university. I had never heard of any other charities or organisations who rented out club venues to provide adults with learning disabilities, the opportunity to experience what it was like to attend a night club. It sounded so rewarding and an amazing opportunity, I enjoyed it so much that after completing university and moving into a full-time job, 3 years later I still love to attend every month.
5. What do you enjoy about volunteering with LEEP1?
I enjoy greeting both new and familiar faces on the front desk, speaking to the attendees and seeing many of the amazing fancy dress costumes! It’s such a rewarding feeling seeing so many people on the dance floor every month with massive smiles on their faces, whilst pulling off some great dance moves! I also enjoy working with the staff from Leep1 who do such fantastic work, they are such credit to the charity.
6. What advice would you give to someone who is considering to become a volunteer at Leep1?
I would massively recommend volunteering for Leep1. Such amazing, loving and caring people. Leep1 staff clearly recognise and appreciate the volunteers help and support, everyone is welcomed and is made to feel part of the team. I am extremely proud to volunteer alongside them.
